Today marks exactly 100 days since beloved Chinese actor Yu Menglong (also known as Alan Yu) suddenly passed away on September 11, 2025 (from September 11 to December 19, 2025). Official reports concluded it was an accidental fall from a building due to intoxication, with police ruling out foul play. However, over 700,000 international petition signatures demanding a reinvestigation show that public trust in this explanation remains deeply shaken.
Looking back at Yu’s old videos through a new lens reveals what many now interpret as subtle cries for help:
- In one clip, Yu draws a picture subtly hiding the number 110 – China’s emergency police hotline. Was this a desperate hidden message?
- Unusual echo effects in videos suggest filming outdoors or in uncontrolled environments, despite being in a studio – signs of house arrest or restricted freedom?
- Starting in 2017, after skyrocketing to fame with Three Lives, Three Worlds, Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms, Yu reportedly refused industry “hidden rules,” leading to isolation and alleged severe abuse (including being hung upside down, head injuries, and more).
The biggest enigma: The red USB drive. Rumors circulating online claim Yu possessed crucial evidence of money laundering and corruption involving powerful figures in the entertainment industry, including tycoons and officials. To protect it, he allegedly swallowed the USB. Perpetrators supposedly forced him to drink, tortured him, and then threw him from the building to retrieve the evidence. Miraculously, according to theories, the USB was safely hidden elsewhere and may soon be released as “revenge” from beyond the grave.
This case connects to broader scandals, such as corruption probes in education and entertainment (like the investigation into Hang Rong), extreme online censorship (millions of posts deleted annually), and even viral letters criticizing high-level leadership. Yu’s former mentor Sun Deyu and other artists continue speaking out bravely despite threats.
