The Shadow of Control: Allegations of Manager Du Qiang in Yu Menglong’s Final Years

In the six months since Chinese actor Yu Menglong’s death on September 11, 2025, public attention has increasingly focused on his manager, Du Qiang (real name Du Yicheng), amid unverified claims of intense surveillance, psychological pressure, and exploitative control. Online narratives describe Du as a “demonic” presence who allegedly monitored Yu’s every move, turning his career into a form of “invisible prison” that eroded his autonomy and mental well-being.

Yu, born in 1988 in Ürümqi, Xinjiang, rose to prominence through talent shows and dramas like Eternal Love. After parting from EE-Media in 2021, he operated under his own studio, with Du Qiang serving as a key figure in management. Fan accounts and circulating clips (including alleged videos of Du slapping Yu in a car or standing nearby during distressed moments on set) have fueled accusations that Du enforced constant oversight—tracking locations, communications, and behavior—under the guise of professional guidance. Some posts claim this stemmed from a high-value “slave contract” (figures like $28 million cited without documentation), with penalties for non-compliance including career sabotage or worse.

These allegations gained traction after Yu’s death, ruled accidental by Beijing police (alcohol-related fall from a high-rise, no foul play). Speculation intensified with reports that Du Qiang “disappeared” post-incident, with unconfirmed rumors of flight to Taiwan under a new identity. Netizens linked him to earlier tragedies: singer-actor Qiao Renliang (2016 suicide) and Shaolin monk-turned-celebrity Qiu Feng (car accident), both reportedly under Du’s management, suggesting a pattern. A viral “17-person insider list” and claims of elite protection (tied to political or business networks) further amplified the narrative.

No official evidence corroborates extreme claims of 24/7 surveillance, physical abuse, or Du’s direct role in Yu’s death. Police statements and family affirmations emphasize accident, with misinformation crackdowns leading to detentions. Du Qiang has not publicly responded; his current status remains unknown, with some outlets noting unverified sightings or alias use.

The case reflects real industry issues: exploitative contracts, mental health pressures, and power imbalances that limit artist freedom. Yu’s gentle public persona contrasted with rumors of private torment—exhaustion in eyes, faltering steps—resonates emotionally, driving petitions and memorials. Yet extreme portrayals of Du as a “demon” risk unsubstantiated vilification amid grief.

As speculation persists, it highlights distrust in official narratives under censorship. Without new probes or verified evidence, Du Qiang remains a symbol of perceived impunity rather than proven culpability, underscoring calls for transparency in entertainment management.
