Drawing from his firsthand experience in the federal facility’s Special Housing Unit (SHU), Franzese argued the physical layout made the official suicide ruling implausible. “There’s just no way to hang yourself,” he insisted. “There’s nothing from the ceiling, there’s nothing from the bed. You’d have to be a midget and work really hard to try to hang yourself, and I don’t think you can accomplish it at that point.”
Franzese pointed to the low bunk height, the thin bedsheet, and the absence of accessible high fixtures or leverage points. In his view, achieving the kind of hanging described—using a bedsheet tied to the top bunk and creating sufficient pressure for asphyxiation—would require improbable contortions and force. “I’ve seen guys try—it doesn’t work like that,” he said, emphasizing that prison design deliberately minimizes such risks.
