From Pageant Stage to Epstein’s Shadow – The JonBenét Ramsey Case That Refuses to Stay Buried

BOULDER, Colorado – 10 March 2026

She was six years old. She wore crowns and sequins. She smiled for judges and cameras and strangers who clapped when she twirled. And on the night after Christmas 1996, someone ended her life in the basement of her own home with a garrote made from her mother’s paintbrush.

For almost 30 years the murder of JonBenét Ramsey has sat like an open wound on American true crime—parents suspected then cleared, DNA that never matched, a ransom note that made no sense, a city that never quite healed. The case was never solved. It was never really closed either.

Now the Epstein files have reached back across decades and brushed against it.

The latest declassification batch contains scattered references—redacted, vague, but unmistakable—to Colorado contacts in late 1996 and early 1997. One 1997 FBI memo summarises an informant’s tip about a “high-profile associate” of Epstein who had been in Boulder “around the holidays” and spoke of “a family problem involving a child beauty contestant.” The lead was marked “unsubstantiated” and appears to have died there.

Another document lists a flight from Palm Beach to Denver on 23 December 1996. The passengers’ names are blacked out, but the initials and flight number match known Epstein travellers.

No one has ever proven Epstein or anyone in his circle was in Boulder that Christmas. No witness has placed him at the Ramsey home. No DNA from the crime scene has ever matched anyone in Epstein’s known network. Yet the mere presence of the references in federal files has reopened a door most people thought had been nailed shut.

John Ramsey, now in his 80s, said in a brief statement: “If these documents contain any credible lead, we want it pursued—no matter who it points to. JonBenét deserves that much.”

The Boulder Police Department confirmed it is reviewing the declassified material but emphasised that “no new actionable evidence has been identified at this time.” The district attorney’s office has made no public comment.

For the generation that grew up with JonBenét’s face on every magazine cover, the Epstein link feels both inevitable and unbearable. Epstein moved in the same elite circles that once celebrated child beauty pageants. He had the money, the jets, the connections. If even one thread connects the two cases, it means the darkness that swallowed JonBenét may have been far older and far wider than anyone wanted to believe.

The files are still coming. Names are still being redacted. Questions are still being asked.

And in the quiet of Boulder, under the same winter sky that covered a six-year-old’s body in 1996, the wound remains open.

Some cases never close.

Some shadows never lift.
