Rep. Lieu demands Deputy AG Todd Blanche be fired after claiming it’s not a crime to party with Jeffrey Epstein. l

In a sharp escalation of partisan tensions surrounding the Epstein files, Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) has called for the removal of Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, accusing him of misunderstanding federal sex trafficking law and downplaying potential accountability for those who associated with Jeffrey Epstein.

The controversy erupted after Blanche, appearing on Fox News, stated that “it is not a crime to party with Mr. Epstein” and that simply emailing or socializing with the late sex offender does not constitute criminal activity. While acknowledging the DOJ would investigate any evidence of misconduct, Blanche emphasized the need for the public to understand the legal limits: mere association or attendance at social events is not, by itself, illegal.

Lieu fired back during a Capitol Hill press conference, declaring he was “highly disturbed” that Blanche “just got the law wrong.” The congressman argued that if Epstein was trafficking minors for sex parties, knowingly attending and “patronizing” such events could violate federal sex trafficking statutes. “If Jeffrey Epstein was human trafficking minors for these sex parties, and you show up and patronize the establishment at that party, yes, you’re guilty,” Lieu said, linking the comment to broader criticism of the Trump administration’s handling of the massive document releases.

The exchange comes amid ongoing fallout from the DOJ’s 2026 Epstein file dump — over 3.5 million pages, including images and videos — which has reignited debates over redactions, victim privacy, and why few new prosecutions have emerged despite years of allegations against powerful figures. Lieu also highlighted the extensive mentions of former President Donald Trump in the files (thousands of times, according to some counts) and pointed to unverified allegations within them, while accusing Republicans of using distractions involving the Clintons.

Critics from the left have framed Blanche’s remarks as evidence of “callous disregard for survivors,” while defenders argue he was simply stating a basic legal principle: association alone does not equal guilt, and prosecutors need concrete evidence of participation in criminal acts — such as paying for or engaging in sex with minors — to bring charges. No new high-profile prosecutions have resulted directly from the latest releases, and many named individuals have long denied any illegal involvement.

Lieu’s demand for Blanche’s resignation adds fuel to an already heated political firestorm. As survivors continue pushing for full transparency and accountability, the clash underscores deep divisions over how the justice system should interpret “knowing participation” versus mere social or business ties in one of the most infamous scandals in modern history.

The question remains: where does legal association end and criminal complicity begin? With public trust in institutions already strained, this latest controversy ensures the Epstein saga will continue dominating headlines and political discourse.
