Little St. James: Epstein’s Private Island as Alleged Epicenter of Child Sex Trafficking

US VIRGIN ISLANDS — Little St. James, the 70-acre private island Jeffrey Epstein purchased in 1998 for $7.95 million, has been described in court documents as the “perfect hideaway” for an expansive criminal enterprise involving the sex trafficking and abuse of underage girls. According to the 2020 civil lawsuit filed by then-US Virgin Islands Attorney General Denise George — settled in 2022 for over $105 million plus proceeds from the island’s sale — Epstein and associates transported dozens of young women and girls, some as young as 12, to the property between 2001 and 2018 using private aircraft, helicopters, and boats. They were lured with promises of financial help, education, or modeling opportunities, only to face deception, coercion, and forced sexual acts.

Unsealed documents from Ghislaine Maxwell’s case (2024) and DOJ releases (including photos and videos from December 2025 and January 2026) detail the island’s role: victims were housed in guest villas, a main residence, and other structures, allegedly forced into “massages” that escalated to rape and commercial sexual exploitation. Virginia Giuffre (Jane Doe #3) testified to being brought there multiple times starting around 2000, with her passport confiscated and coerced into sexual encounters. Other accounts, including from Sarah Ransome, describe girls arriving in Victoria’s Secret outfits provided upon landing, posing for photos, and being pressured to recruit peers for additional payments.

The US Virgin Islands lawsuit alleged violations of anti-trafficking laws (14 V.I.C. §§ 133-138), citing logs, photos, and employee testimonies showing a pattern of abuse. Palm Beach police detective Joseph Recarey (in 2006 grand jury testimony) noted many victims were under 18 with no massage experience, recruited by Maxwell and others. Epstein’s “enterprise” reportedly used fraud and threats to maintain control, with the island’s isolation — featuring pools, a spa, helipad, and temple-like structure — enabling secrecy.

The estate settled the Virgin Islands case in December 2022, agreeing to sell Little St. James (and neighboring Great St. James) to fund payments and prevent future misuse. Epstein died by suicide in federal custody in 2019 while awaiting trial on new federal sex-trafficking charges; Maxwell was convicted in 2022 and sentenced to 20 years for her role in recruitment and facilitation.

Reactions remain intense: survivor advocates criticize delays in justice, while unsealed materials (including 2025-2026 DOJ tranches with 3 million+ pages, 2,000 videos, and 180,000 images) continue fueling scrutiny of high-profile names mentioned in logs or emails (though many deny wrongdoing). The case symbolizes systemic failures: how a convicted offender (from his 2008 Florida plea deal) could allegedly continue operations on a private island for years. As documents keep surfacing, questions linger about accountability for enablers and the true extent of the network.
