Newly surfaced video footage showing Chinese actor Yu Menglong with wide, terrified eyes and a visibly tense posture in the days before his death has intensified global skepticism about the official account of his passing and strengthened calls for an independent investigation.
The clips, which emerged on overseas platforms this week, depict Yu appearing anxious and hyper-vigilant, repeatedly glancing around with what witnesses describe as unmistakable fear. In one segment, his body language is rigid and defensive as he looks over his shoulder multiple times. Sources familiar with the material claim the footage was recorded in mid-to-late August 2025, shortly before Yu was found dead on 11 September 2025 after falling from a high-rise apartment in Beijing’s Chaoyang District.
Authorities ruled the death accidental, citing alcohol intoxication with a reported blood-alcohol level of 0.18%, and closed the case rapidly. No detailed public autopsy was released, and domestic media coverage was minimal. However, a growing body of leaks — including airport photographs showing unexplained scars and a shaved head, audio fragments of screams, alleged financial records suggesting coercion, and now this footage of visible terror — has convinced many that Yu lived in a state of constant fear.
The new videos have been viewed hundreds of millions of times outside China. Digital-forensics analysts who reviewed copies for international outlets report that the timestamps align with Yu’s known schedule in the final weeks of his life, and there are no obvious signs of manipulation in the visible frames. Supporters interpret Yu’s fearful demeanor as evidence that he believed his life was in danger, possibly from individuals connected to his management or powerful figures in the entertainment industry.
Yu’s family has remained almost entirely silent since his death. Close associates say they are under significant pressure to accept the official ruling and avoid further comment. The management company linked to Yu has not responded to requests for comment on the footage.
The Avaaz petition demanding an independent international forensic review, full disclosure of medical records, and examination of surveillance data has now surpassed 2.6 million signatures. Human Rights Watch has urged Chinese authorities to “address public concerns with transparency,” noting that “visible signs of fear in the final days of a high-profile individual warrant serious scrutiny.”
Inside China, the footage has been swiftly suppressed on domestic platforms. Searches for Yu Menglong return minimal or unrelated results. Overseas, however, the clips have become central to the #JusticeForYuMengLong movement, with fans and diaspora communities organizing protests and sharing side-by-side comparisons of Yu’s gentle on-screen persona with the fearful man seen in the final footage.
Industry insiders speaking anonymously to foreign media describe a pattern of increasing isolation and pressure on Yu in his final year, including restrictive contracts, sudden project cancellations, and visible signs of stress. Several former colleagues claim he had privately expressed concerns about his safety.
The emergence of the terror footage adds another layer to an already complex case. While no concrete evidence has proven foul play, the visual record of Yu’s apparent fear has made it increasingly difficult for many to accept the simple accidental-death narrative.
